  • Pretty, but could be much more useable
iBooks is quite pretty, but it looks like it was written with too much emphasis on eye candy. The bookshelf will be utterly useless once you have a few hundred titles, with no support for groupings. The list view is much better, but could use more tools to group books. It does not allow you to modify categories of your books on the device, you can add bookmarks, but no annotations. The table of content does not show you in which chapter you are in (and it does not tell you anywhere else). There is search, but not for multiple books at the same time ( difficult, I admit, because you mostly will want to search only a category, and not all books, so it can be a bit tricky to do that easily). Quite a pity, since search is the one huge advantage of electronic books over their physical brethren. This app is aesthetically pleasing, but its interactions are designed for libraries of no more than a dozen or so books. For hundreds of books the app will need to see quite some improvement that will hopefully come. At least it supports drm free epub files, but even those only in a half baked manner, since you can only load these via iTunes and not on the device from the web. Over de selectie in de shop is nog niet veel te zeggen, het zou tot de Nederlandse start van het iPad behalve van public domain boeken leeg blijven.

  • Excellent Reader
Stanza is an excellent reader that makes reading a pleasure, making me completely forget that I use it, instead allowing me to get engrossed in the story. There are only two points that I would like to see improved: a) hyphenation choice by title, or if ebooks have the info, directly by the title's language and b) a search function across all ebooks and/or a category.

  • Data Hog

  • Great app, but huge fonts
With the ios 4 update of this app, it no longer crashes on ios4, but the font choices have become skewed on a 3GS. The smallest setting is about the same size as the notes font, and the largest one can be read easily from five feet. I would love to see the choices expanded down to about 70% the current size, as it was possible before, especially since the retina display will make reading small fonts much easier than it is right now.

  • Finally Retina support, but only for new issues
With support for the Retina display, the text has now become much easier to read and it is actually quite a pleasure reading. But still the experience could be improved: - allow us to look up names in all articles - allow background downloads of issues, so you can read something else while waiting, not everyone has 100 mbit Internet. Especially learn to resume downloads, quite frustrating that the app throws away any partial download upon app switching. - make the old issues also retina friendly, they look atrocious on the retina iPad.
