  • Substantial content and usability problems
Just installed the new version (6?) released with iOS 8. It is a huge step backward in usability and content. 1. It appears they have substantially reduced the number of photos. I did not find a Photos of the Day. Maybe it was there somewhere. I didn't see it. Bring back Photos of the Day. 2. The number of photos within each article has been reduced. Bring back the additional photos. 3. I am no longer able to see all photos on the first page of an article. The few photos that are present are scattered across the pages of an article, rather than appearing on the first page. This limits the photo spread for shorter articles. In the past, even a short (text) article might have several photos. No more. Make all photos accessible on the first page of each story. 4. Ads are now inserted into the center of individual articles. In prior versions, the ads appear between articles. Now we get bombarded by the same inane ad several dozen times while reading the morning paper. Remove full page ads from individual stories. 5. Navigation is a disaster. They have created several ways to navigate, which don't all lead readers to the same set of stories. The section summary screens no longer include all the stories. To see every story, you have to open the sidebar, scroll down, and click on a story title. But many story titles are not descriptive. So, you can't tell what the story is about (not even close) unless you open the story. Bring all stories back into the section summary screens. 6. If you are trying to read the stories via the sidebar, you have to click once (on the 3-bar symbol) to open the sidebar, then scroll down in the sidebar list to find your place, then click on the next interesting story. In contrast, the old version took you back to the highlights page (section summary?) just by swiping down. Simplify sidebar navigation: when I reopen the sidebar, the story I was just reading should be selected in the sidebar so I don't have to find my place in the list every time. 7. Swiping seems to have disappeared. Instead, you have to find the small user-interface element and click on it (e.g., the return arrow in upper left or the 3-bar symbol in upper right). There is a reason swiping is a key part of tablet UI: it's an easy action that conveys intent but does not require precise finger placement. Bring back swiping. I've been a WSJ reader for over three decades, including several years on iPad. I'll reluctantly find another source for news if this app does not improve quickly.

  • Don’t leave home without it
Just spent several weeks in London and used this app several times a day. For transit options, this does it all. Effectively presents time, distance and cost options for train, bus, taxi and walking. Good integration of map and turn-by-turn directions. Includes service outages. Works well with limited cell data: plan your route at home and track your progress as you walk or ride (even with cellular data turned off). Very impressive. Can’t wait to use it in other supported cities.

  • Great set of apps that keep improving
Each new version of 1Password brings real, useful improvements. I’ve used the companion Mac OS app for over 5 years and have used this iOS version since it was first released. Agilebits keeps improving the product — both the internal stuff and the UI — with each new version. Agilebits are early adopters of new os features. For instance, on iOS 8, 1Password is supporting Touch ID and Safari extensions (password fill on iOS Safari). And these features are available the same day as the os release. The Mac OS version is even better than this iOS app. Data syncs seamlessly across my iOS and OS-X devices. Collectively, these are “set it and forget it” apps: no nasty surprises; no hiccups. They are the ones you want to protect passwords and other sensitive personal data.

  • Great offline map with GPS
Just spent a month in UK with a very pricey cell data plan. This map app let us navigate around town with cellular data turned off. The included Points Of Interest seemed to cover almost everything we were looking for.

  • Worthless: crashes on iOS 8
Absolutely worthless. Paid $17. Crashes instantly. No value whatsoever.
