Classroom Cursive Classroom CursiveThis app has all the components needed for the classroom instructor- clean, clear, engaging screens with no distraction. It offers positive reinforcement after each correct cursive letter, it has arrows as needed for the user to follow and small simple games after the letter z for the user to play quietly in the classroom. If a user wants to practice at home there is the option to add background music while practicing, email or print.

Very sloppily made Very sloppily madeThe one good thing is that it reminded me how the cursive letters were formed, since I had forgotten. But as for teaching my 3rd grader cursive? Terrible. You have to drag the 'smarty bug' through the letter shape, at which point you are told, "good job!" But there is no control or awareness over which direction the stroke goes. As long as the bug stops at the end point, it's considered a good job! So, fill in a certain percentage of the shape and go straight to the end... It doesn't actually teach anything. What's worse is that the bug won't recognize a tap until 2-3 touches, and then it starts moving. Sometimes, it won't recognize that you've reached the end until you wiggle the bug into the invisible end target. Or sometimes, like on the S, the bug brushes past the end point just as you start the movement, and then you hear, "good job!" The "games" are a travesty, and the occasional debugging alert doesn't help at all. My child was actually quite upset that I had wasted money on this thing.

Cursive practice Cursive practiceMy 7 year old needs to practice her cursive and her issues are with connecting the letters to form a word. After trying three or four apps, this is the first one that practices words and correctly connecting the letters. Great job!

Needs more options, but a nice clean interface... Needs more options, but a nice clean interface...There are several things I like, but that seem to be not quite fully thought out. For example, you can choose from a variety of colors, but once you select a new color, the writing changes to the new color- I was hoping to allow "rainbow writing". Another plus is the email feature- but you can only send one small line of handwriting- it would be great if you could send that session's worth of handwriting, or atleast a full page of practice letters or words to a teacher's or parent's email, instead of just one line. I also appreciate the practice screen where you can trace along the line with "Smarty" but feel like it is too finicky- it is hard to get right. (I would love difficulty settings here so as to not frustrate some users.) I like the erase (the whole screen erases) but would prefer a back button also so you don't have to choose to start all over for one minor error. I like that there are options for upper case, lower case, sight words and open-ended practice, but I would love if the sight word or letter would remain as an example at the top, while the student copied it on a separate line below, either independently, or with the option to trace over guidance lines. I really like the clean interface, and hope more options like this will be added to make this app more functional.
