Not quite there yet - but close Not quite there yet - but closeI’m a professional website designer and typically have used Adobe’s products. Not being on board with their subscription model, I’ve been seeking alternatives. And what an alternative this is - a great app for website design, application design and UX prototyping. This is powerful, easy to use and has a growing base of support - so it’s not hard to find assests such as Boostrap grids and widgets. I’ve made the swtich from Fireworks to this and am pretty happy. There’s still some polish to be added, it has a few glitches and needs some more features - but it’s getting close.

Great application but buggy. Great application but buggy. They need to add the text value in the side bar when selected a text object. There are times it’s impossible to edit text because when you try to click on it it just selects it’s super view. I can pick it in the side bar but as soon as I click on the text to edit it it goes back to selecting the super view. I understand clicking multiple times is suppose to drill down in the layer hierarchy but it doesn’t always work.

A great vector drawing / design app A great vector drawing / design appI’ve just started usking Sketch and I am very impressed. I am not a graphic designer, but I need to work with graphics regularly as part of my job. I’m a pretty proficient amateur with Photoshop, but I’ve never been able to figure out Illustrator and Omnigraffle always leaves me frustrated. So far Sketch is looking great. I am working through the manual. Everything makes sense. The tools are accessible. I have been able to get done what I’ve wanted to get done easily and intuitively. It is jaw dropping. I am very excited to have Sketch in my everyday toolbox. Thank you Bohemian Coding! (Note: I am using the public beta of version 3.2.)

The best app for iOS design The best app for iOS designI develop iOS apps, but I am an engineer before a designer. Sketch has strongly encouraged me to put more effort into designing my apps because it not only makes it incredibly easy, but it also makes it an incredibly enjoyable experience. Firstly, Sketch has a wide variety of templates for both iOS user interfaces and app icons. The current UI template is targeted at the 4” size of the iPhone 5/S, however creating additional artboards at larger or small sizes is trivial. At first I was a little confused that the app icon template didn’t allow you to create the same icon at all the different possible resolutions (note that it is possible to export a single artboard at any resolution - I am referring to the different sizes required for different devices) but this has the advantage that you ensure that you app icon looks great at all sizes. This template also contains the ‘super-ellipse’ shape of iOS app icons that you can use as a mask for to get a better idea of what the icon will look like on Springboard. Designing iOS UI is a lot easier than in other apps because it contains symbols for common user interface elements, such as navigation bars, tab bars and alerts. This means that you can get a feel for exactly what your app will really look like. Symbols are a powerful tool for your workflow as well because changes to them synchronise across other instances (I like to think of each instance of a symbol referencing a prototyped singleton instance, a bit like how UIAppearance works) which means that you can easily change key fonts or colours in your app. My favourite feature of Sketch is the Mirror app. This is an iOS app that allows you to view your designs in real time on a device whilst you work on them on your Mac. The two biggest problems the Mirror solves are that I can instantly tell if a UI element is the right size and if it is the right colour. If you’ve bought Sketch but not the Mirror, I highly recommend you do because it is a small but worthwhile investment on top of the cost of the app itself. The vector tools in Sketch are easy to use and their one-key shortcuts aid productivity. I’ve sometimes found that the alignment lines get in my way a little (occasionally I resort to using arrow keys or typing positions manually), but I’ve found them to be very good - much better than the storyboard editor in Xcode, for example. Sketch’s performance impressed me from the beginning. I’ve been able to edit large artboards with 1000s of vectors without any lag. However, Sketch is not with out its downsides. For example, iOS UI designs are measured in retina points. The artboard is 640 * 1136 points, despite the iPhone 5S being 320 * 568 points. If you halve these numbers the preview doesn’t display in retina with the Mirror. Therefore all metrics are two times greater than they would be when writing the iOS app. For example, all fonts that would appear 18pt in your app are 36pt in Sketch. Given that we are now designing for @1x, @2x and @3x screens, I would much rather the template and the Mirror used standard @1x coordinates because this is easier to then create the real UI from. Overall, I’ve loved using Sketch over the past few months and I couldn’t recommend it enough if you need to do iOS app design.
