If you dive or snorkel Florida or the Caribbean and you want to figure out what you've seen, this app is a must have. It could be better, like adding your own photos or notes. But there is nothing else remotely close for usefulness and ease of use.

Useful guide Useful guide

Excellent photos of fish that should allow for easy identification. As others have noted, the text is pixelated when viewed on the iPad using the entire screen (at 2x). The text would benefit from some further editing. The menus are easy to use. This is a nice guide for someone already familiar with the fish families, but even someone less familiar will find it useful. The movie links are limited and are not all depicting fish from the Florida and Caribbean. A nifty feature allows one to select a menu of favorites. I plan to use this to list all the fish I observe on my next trip. Overall, I think this is a very nice guide for the price.

What a great on the spot reference. I'm using this on both my iPHONE and iPAD. The 2X on the iPAD is really only pixelated on the application but the photos are pretty darn clear in 2X. The developer is talking about an iPAD version (which I have no problem spending the extra 5 bucks). In order to view the videos you want to be connected via wifi and not 3G because of the bandwidth requirments. One addition that I would like to see on the Florida version is the addition of Turtles. We have LOTS of Turtles in Florida and they warrent a family. Thanks much to the author ... way to go!

I've only looked at this for a few minutes, and the content seems good, but interface is impractical. The main page showing the Fish Families should have an alternate view with larger pictures, or the ability to enlarge and then scroll - we need to see more detail with fewer clicks. Once you click on a fish family, we should be able to flip through the different members of that family - not return - click each time to hone in on the particular fish you are trying to ID. This is important to functionality - especially for a $5 app. I am looking forward to an update so I can improve the rating.

Description

This snorkelers’ guide to the most common shallow-water reef fish in Florida and the Caribbean includes 444 gorgeous underwater photos together with extensive notes for each. All content is by experts in the field: leading marine life author Robert Myers, photographers Robert Myers and Patrice Marker, and snorkeling guidebook authors, Judy and Mel Malinowski. As a bonus, links to underwater videos by Keller Laros, Rob Whitton, Mel Malinowski and others are provided.

This app provides a beautiful and convenient way to look up fish you have seen, or would like to see. It is fast and easy to use. Because of the large number of high quality pictures the size is 54 MB, thus you must download it via WiFi or better (not cellular).

Users can view an indexed list of 63 fish families with a thumbnail of a typical fish from that family. Tap on a family to see the fish from that family, with a thumbnail picture, and the common name. Tap on that fish to see a detail view, with large picture, and detailed notes about the fish.

Tap on the fish picture to enlarge it to full screen. Tap again to return. Tap on an add button to add to personal Favorites list.

Tap on Fish List to display a complete indexed alphabetical list of over 400 fish, with thumbnail pictures, and common name. Tap on one row to see details for that fish.

Tap on Slideshow to see a full screen slideshow of sharp, colorful pictures in random order. Tap again to see the name of the fish. Swipe to go to the detail view with notes. Tap to return to the slideshow, or tap twice to exit.

Tap on Favorites to view a list of personal 'Favorites', which can be added to, edited, or deleted.

Tap on Books to view other resources available from the authors, including detailed fish identification books and snorkeling site guidebooks.

An 'i' button on the top right of the front page leads to complete instructions for the app. The app is so intuitive, however, that this is unlikely to be needed.

Other apps in the Reef Fish series include Reef Fish Hawaii and Mauna Lani (free).
