Petrarca: Le Rime (Petrarch: The Rimes) contains the “Canzoniere” and “I Trionfi” (the Triumphs), the poems in the early Italian language of Petrarch (“Father of Humanism”), among the highest in Italian poetry. The Canzoniere tells of unrequited love for Laura, the center around which the very rich and original spiritual life of the poet develops. Other themes are important: religion, poetry, politics, time, glory. The Triumphs describe an allegorical representation of human life, from the struggle against the passions to the awareness of the transience of earthly things, to the final victory of Eternity.
