Equals the Excel I used with my Mac SE!! Equals the Excel I used with my Mac SE!!Numbers has a long way to go to substitute for Excel. Lots of basic functionality is missing. i.e - can’t set page breaks - makes printing large spreadsheets impossible. I haven’t figured out how to set header columns or rows, to make printed spreadsheets usable. Can’t set scroll bars to see extreme left and right of large spreadsheets (or top and bottom) at the same time - makes using Numbers very difficult if the spreadsheets are large, which mine are. I had hoped to use Numbers for my grade books, so I would have them on my home computer and iPhone at the same time. It does work for that, but working with Numbers is like working with Excel 20 years ago. The fact I can’t see the extreme left an right or top and bottom of my grade books at the same time makes Numbers almost unusable. So I will be giving up on Numbers and will be up loading my Excel spreadsheets after each edit to iCloud and opening them with Numbers on my iPhone to review grades with my students. Though cumbersome it is less cumbersome than trying to use Numbers. Also be aware. I had a syncronization glitch which caused me to lose a whole days worth of grades after I had returned the material to the class!! Thankfully I had exported that days work to an Excel spreadsheet (works well) and thus did not lose that essential data. Was very scary until I remembered that export! Since the Numbers spreadsheet was on iCloud, and not my computer, that spreadsheet was not routinely backed up by Time Machine. Without that export those days grades would have been gone - not good. I wanted to like Numbers - but it is just too primitive and unreliable to be useful to me.

sad to say it has the bells and whisles, but not the basic spreadsheet functions! sad to say it has the bells and whisles, but not the basic spreadsheet functions!i need a spreadsheet without fancy margins or which i will turn into a graph for the simple procedure of copying data that is laid out in spreadsheet fashion within my online banking, then pasting it into a simple spreadsheet that then looks like what i copied. rather, the data that is so carefully laid out by the bank copies, but when i paste it into the sheet, it ends up in columm A, meanting that all that data i need to perform functions with has to be looked at one by one, then TYPED into the appropriate column! what a drag! one cannot get help on this either. you get a fancy app with numbers, but don’t expect it to do your functions without a big, long pain in the a** day wasted.

Pales to Excel Pales to ExcelI’m not much of one for hyping a Microsoft product, but in this case, Excel is still the standard to go with. I’m just a casual user who can do nearly everything I need in Excel without much trouble, VLOOKUP, pivot tables, data entry and manipulation are all pretty easy with microsoft, but I struggle with Numbers. I want to use it. I want to like it, but every time I try something comes up that I can’t do and the only answer on the furms is “use a different tool then”. Well, ok.

Toy spreadsheet Toy spreadsheetThis version is such a reduction from version 2. All the UI elements are too big, wasting screen space. Functionality has been ripped out and doesn't seem to be coming back. The inspector gobbles up big chunks of each document window instead of being a separate panel. Editing table outlines is even more painful than in v2—a feat I thought to be impossible. Opening old documents is a crapshoot with the removed features and file format differences. I'm going to use Numbers v2 for a while yet, since I have some active documents, but I will be migrating all my data away from Apple's iWork apps as they don't seem to get the basic idea that my documents should remain accessible over time.

terrible with iCloud Drive terrible with iCloud DriveI normally like Numbers. It’s a great app. However, with iCloud Drive, I cannot open my files in Numbers on the computer. This syncing problem is tempering my likeness of this app. I should not have to 1) have a hard time syncing files from iCloud to the Numbers app, and 2) not be able to find support in fixing this, what would seem a relatively easy issue. So i give it one star until they fix the problem.
