Still THE best Thai language app??? Still THE best Thai language app???I suppose this is obvious by the title of my review but this IS THE BEST THAI LANGUAGE LEARNING APP I HAVE SEEN. I was a little worried when I saw there was an update for this app as it was perfect as it was but the update seems to just be to optimise the app for iOS 8 which I don't have so hasn't affected my experience with it. As I said in an earlier review this app is made by fluent native Thai speakers so you can rest assured that pronunciations are accurate. To have the word or phrase played to u (at any speed that you feel comfortable with) puts this app head and shoulders above other apps. I don't wanna sound like some lackey writing good reviews for money or something but this app is unique in that it allows you to record what you say and play it back so you can get the tones just right. This is essential for the Thai language as it's a tonal language ie the pitch of the syllable changes the meaning entirely. The example Lonely Planet uses to describe this is a good one- "Mai mai mai mai mai?" It translates to young(new) wood doesn't burn does it? You can imagine how important using the correct tone for each word is when you think how muddled you would sound to a Thai speaker if you got the tones wrong (of course in written Thai the spelling and tone markers {่้etc} make the distinctions obvious). I can't stress enough the need for native pronunciation for the above reasons and as this app has this then you know your getting precise translations. I have witnessed people who have learnt Thai from non-native speakers and it's not a pretty sight watching someone who has spent long hours thinking they are learning the language at home only to find out no-one understands a word they are saying when they try out their 'skills' on actual Thai persons. It's funny I gotta admit but must be infuriating for the person who,in good faith, paid good money to someone who thought they were teaching Thai properly. Really, you just can't go wrong with this app. A HUGE THUMBS UP TO THE DEVS. ??? Sincerely, Paulo BTW. This is without purchasing any extras just the free version.
