Good Images, Bad Interface Good Images, Bad InterfaceThe images in this app are definitely far superior to what you find on the web using the same search terms. I've only used this on the iPhone and maybe it works better on the iPad, but the interface is so frustrating that I find this app to be unusable. When you enter a keyword for a search, a list of possible searches comes up. If you click on one of them, it populates the search field, but doesn't run the search until you click the search button. This isn't a big deal, but it's awkward and doesn't conform to interface guidelines. When the list of images comes up, each image has a blurb beside it. Most of the ones I have seen are all the titles of the WebMD articles that the images were pulled from. Others are the captions of Mayo Clinic pictures. The pictures aren't necessarily of what you searched for. They're just images found on pages containing your keyword. Still, a lot of them are high quality. When you click on an image, you get a pop up with options to open up the full sized image so you can zoom & rotate it, bookmark the image, or open the source web page. Choosing to open a web page closes the app & opens the link in Safari. This makes looking at more than one of the links overly time consuming. Bookmarking works, but I also ended up with bookmarks of several pictures I opened but didn't intend to bookmark. Navigating the app is the most frustrating problem. I can't find a back button to use after opening a picture so that I can look at other results from my list. When I go back to the search field, my last search has been cleared. I have to redo the search after each time I open an image if I want to view more results. The reference section, which seems to just be a browser for Medline Plus, is much easier to navigate. It has no search, though, so you have to find your topic using menus & submenus. A lot of the pages don't have pictures, but a few of them have relevant images. This app provides a way to search for images on top medical websites that don't provide built in image searches. Still, similar results can be obtained by running a Google image search for a keyword and adding site:webmd.com OR site:mayoclinic.com to your search. If Fotomed is updated with a back button, recent search history, and a built in browser so that you don't have to open Safari to view a link, it will be a much more usable app and I'll return to using it.
