Late Beta Oddly Organized -- Crashes Late Beta Oddly Organized -- CrashesUpdate, 2012-07-17: Unusable. Crashes to Springboard on attempting to load, on new iPod Touch Gen 4 with iOS 5. Review Updated 2012-02-28: I buy all promising astronomy apps and follow their development. This one has potential, but is really a late beta in its current state. Unlike all the major astronomy apps, it crashes and freezes often on iPod Gen 2. These apps are profoundly difficult to write, so respect it and buy it to support its development, but be aware of its current flaws. There was a time when many currently successful astronomy apps were similarly idiosyncratic. It will likely improve. It has the bones of an excellent app. Skypix is strangely and inconveniently organized if one hopes to search for an object, but it works well for tapping objects already visible on the display. The English interface is oddly translated from the French original. The "News" section is much better written, and appears to be abstracts from a French magazine. The many astrophotographs throughout appear at first to be too small to matter, but some can be enlarged with a button that appears when higher resolution is available. More of these larger images are needed. The blurb on the App Store implies that the map can be displayed as a single astrophotograph, but it is only a crude, cartoon-like drawing suitable for DOS, not iOS. Jerky frame rates when panning render it almost unusable. There is no way to control the magnitude of stars displayed, and all of them are shown in the identical size, color, and brightness, so the map is crowded and confusing. The names of objects similarly crowd the map; they do not auto-hide according to the level of zoom. The Search function is especially weak. Skypix may be able to search for many thousands of objects, but only if you already know their names to type them. There is no index, except for for an "Encyclopedia" that contains all of the Messier objects and maybe a hundred others. To find them, one must follow hierarchical menus by category, so "Galaxies" are found in a different section of the app from "Clusters." There is no single listing of each of the Messier, NGC, and Hipparcos catalogs. From within the Encyclopedia, objects are centered on the chart by tapping the button inexplicably labeled, "Around the element." Perhaps that is a literal mistranslation from the French, referring to the box surrounding the found object? Worse, searches are unforgiving. "M33" is not in the catalog; instead (note the space!) one must search for "M 33." On the chart, tap an object to display information about it. The few objects found in the "Encyclopedia" display popup boxes with links to the Encyclopedia. All others, the vast majority of objects, occasionally display only their names on a thin title bar that is too narrow to read, and that appears only when the interface is not typically unresponsive.

Does not work Does not workThe application does not locate correctly even the moon. Big disappointment, at least with an iPad 2.

Alan AlanDownloaded it but it just doesn't work. Uninstalled and reloaded and it doesn't work. Start screen comes up but crashes back to home screen. Contacted the writers but they haven't replied after two weeks. That's all in all not very good is it? It isn't a cheap ap in the scheme of things so I'm not happy. First duff ap I've had.
